Department of Population Health Divisions, Sections & Centers

Our divisions, sections, and centers advance innovative approaches to improving health for all.

The divisions, sections, and centers in NYU Langone’s Department of Population Health engage in interdisciplinary research, training, and service to improve health and health equity at the population level. Together, the department’s six divisions house numerous sections and centers, spanning diverse disciplines including epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral economics, medical ethics, and healthcare delivery science.

The department also leads NYU Langone’s Community Service Plan and Community Health Needs Assessment, platforms for evidence-based health promotion and disease prevention at the neighborhood level that emphasize fostering healthful behavior change and reducing risk factors for disease.

Divisions

Our six divisions conduct collaborative research, offer education and training, and provide administrative homes to our faculty and staff.

Division of Biostatistics

In the Division of Biostatistics, we work to transform data into insights to improve individual and population health.

Division of Comparative Effectiveness and Decision Science

In the Division of Comparative Effectiveness and Decision Science, we use innovative tools to assess the likely outcomes of population health improvement strategies.

Division of Epidemiology

In the Division of Epidemiology, we aim to discover the true causes of disease and identify persistent and emerging trends in health and disease across diverse population groups.

Division of Health and Behavior

In the Division of Health and Behavior, we develop programs and conduct research to help individuals engage in healthful behaviors and help healthcare systems encourage healthful behavior changes in their patients and communities.

Division of Healthcare Delivery Science

In the Division of Healthcare Delivery Science, we bridge the gap between research and healthcare delivery. Our aim is to advance research evidence and practice in implementation science, quality of care, and patient safety.

Division of Medical Ethics

In the Division of Medical Ethics, we work to address moral and practical issues in all aspects of healthcare and biotechnology, to ensure that patients are treated justly and humanely.

Sections

Our four sections comprise research teams studying a diverse array of topics.

Section on Health Choice, Policy, and Evaluation

In the Section on Health Choice, Policy, and Evaluation, we investigate how public policy and neighborhood and other environmental factors impact the choices people make and their health. We are part of the Division of Health and Behavior and the Division of Comparative Effectiveness and Decision Science.

Section for Health Equity

In the Section for Health Equity, we promote health equity in racial and ethnic minority populations and socially disadvantaged communities. We are part of the Division of Health and Behavior.

Section on Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug Use

In the Section on Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug Use, we develop and evaluate innovative strategies to prevent and treat substance use disorders and addiction. We are part of the Division of Comparative Effectiveness and Decision Science.

Section on Value and Effectiveness

In the Section on Value and Effectiveness, we bring together a variety of research tools and use modeling to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and success of strategies aimed at improving health. We are part of the Division of Comparative Effectiveness and Decision Science.

Centers

Our six centers translate the results of innovative research into clinical care in communities.

Center for Early Childhood Health and Development

In the Center for Early Childhood Health and Development, we work to improve children’s health and development and advance health equity by using real-world solutions for children in low-income communities. We are part of the Division of Health and Behavior.

Center for Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Science

In the Center for Healthcare Innovation and Delivery Science, our mission is to improve patient health and wellbeing by fostering the development of effective, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare systems at NYU Langone and nationally. We are closely affiliated with the Division of Healthcare Delivery Science.

NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center

In the NYU-CUNY Prevention Research Center, we implement, evaluate, and disseminate interventions that link communities and clinical care to reduce cardiovascular disease and other health disparities in ethnically diverse New York City communities. We are closely affiliated with the Section for Health Equity and Division of Epidemiology.

Center for Opioid Epidemiology and Policy

In the Center for Opioid Epidemiology and Policy, our mission is to develop sound scientific evidence on the nature, causes, and consequences of the opioid overdose epidemic. Our work seeks to inform evidence-based policies to prevent opioid misuse, disorder, and overdose, as well as to expand such efforts through training and education in opioid epidemiology and policy research and its applications. We are part of the Division of Epidemiology.

Center for the Study of Asian American Health

In the Center for the Study of Asian American Health, our mission is to identify health priorities and reduce health disparities in the Asian American community through research, training, and partnership. We are closely affiliated with the Section for Health Equity.

Center for Innovation in Measuring Population Health

In the Center for Innovation in Measuring Population Health, our mission is to develop innovative surveillance data sources and methodology to better understand the relationship between population health and social determinants and the unequal health of populations across demographic and social groups, particularly in urban settings. We are part of the Division of Epidemiology.
